Kaws began as a graffiti artist who originally focused on subverting advertising images on New York City bus shelters, phone booths, and billboards. His paintings and sculptures explore how infused a popular cartoon character a cast of a character and motifs which rework familiar cultural icons and are meant to communicate a universally understood message.
