Calder was an American sculptor known as the originator of the mobile, a type of moving sculpture made with delicately balanced or suspended shaped that move in response to touch or air currents. He also produced wire figures and stationary sculptures called stabiles. Calder's kinetic sculptures are regarded as the earliest manifestations of art that departed from the traditional notion of artwork as static.
